Burnout: How to Prevent & Identify it

In today's world, the "grind" is constantly normalized to be the equivalent of "successful". We have to take a step back and ask ourselves why this is our reality today.

Why are we chasing the thrill of constantly being ON and rarely resting?

Why do we feel guilty when we actually take time to rest physically and/or mentally?

Often people don't recognize the warning signs before it's too late. It is preventable with the right tools, not only for yourself but for those around you as well.

Here's some perspective:

In Canada, 59% of workers feel somewhat or extremely burned out.

Burnout has risen sharply in recent years:

  • 33% in 2023

  • 42% in 2024

  • 47% in 2025

It's important to ask ourselves why this is still a problem in our reality today.

What is a Burnout?

Burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress — especially when that stress feels overwhelming, constant, or out of your control.

There is a sense of helplessness and detachment to it; Detachment from work, responsibilities, even family.

Indicator of being burnt-out:

It's more than just being tired — it’s a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion.

There are a range of signs visible at the very beginning that progress and creep in.

Who Does Burnout Affect

It can anyone experiencing prolonged, unmanaged chronic stress, most commonly within an occupational context, but it is not limited to this type of person.

Most common:

-Professionals in high-stress roles

-Individuals in demanding jobs (Physical and/or mental)

-Caregivers

-People facing major life stressors

-Ambitious, high-achieving, or perfectionist individuals (Type A personalities)

Bottom line is no-one is protected from being burnt-out, and it is important to be aware of the common signs associated to it.

How To Prevent a Burnout

  1. Balance Effort with Real Recovery

Stress isn't necessarily the problem. Stress becomes a problem when there is no recovery to it.

    Ask yourself:

    "Am I getting enough sleep?"

"Do I carve out some time for myself throughout the day/night?"

"Do I do activities that I actually enjoy and shut-off my brain?"

"Do I cherish actual downtime with no productivity or goals?"

  2. Notice Early Warning Signs

    -Constant fatigue

    -Irritability or Emotional numbness

    -Loss of motivation

    -Difficulty concentrating

-Dreading things you once handled fine

-Loosing interest in things you usually love

  3. Set and Protect Boundaries

Start saying "no" to overwhelming tasks or things you don't wanna do - Whether it's plans with people in your life or someone taking advantage of you/your time at work, start gradually implementing boundaries in the things that take up your battery.

Boundaries also means starting to prioritize yourself over others - Limit over-giving emotionally all the time.

  4. Learn to Regulate Your Nervous System

Your body and mind needs regular signs & reminders of safety.

Resetting your nervous system is an excellent way to remind your body and

mind of safety.

The Best Way to Regulate Your Nervous System

(The Jolie Vie way)

A lot of the times, people don't realize that their body is in an automatic "fight or flight mode".

Fight or Flight is your body's automatic survival response to danger or perceived threat.

Why it exists?

This response evolved so humans could survive threats - Like predators, danger or emergencies.

Today, the same survival system activates for psychological stress, not just physical danger.

Common Indicators of Fight or Flight:

-Chronic stress

-Anxiety

-Insomnia

-Fatigue and tension

One of The Best Ways to Regulate Your Nervous System

Contrast therapy has been proven time and time again by science as well personal testimonies.

It has been practiced for thousands of years in ancient civilizations for self-healing purposes.

Contrast therapy involves moving back and forth from varying temperatures of heat to cold.

Think of it as a workout for your autonomic nervous system (the system that controls stress and relaxation automatically).

Switching from heat to cold is very powerful when it comes to recovery of the

muscles, body and mind.

This teaches your nervous system how to:

Adapt quickly to stress

Calm down more efficiently

Avoid staying “stuck” in survival mode

Build resilience to physical and emotional stress

Over time, this improves nervous system flexibility — a key marker of health and emotional regulation.

At Jolie Vie Wellness Retreat, the main experience is contrast therapy. Our
