5 Holistic Therapy Myths

There can be a lot of misconception as to what holistic therapy entails. The confusion it causes makes it difficult to separate fact from fiction. After reading this blog, you'll have a better understanding on what holistic therapy actually encompasses.

Here are five common holistic therapy myths debunked by scientific research :

What is Holistic Therapy ?

Holistic Therapy is a way of approaching life, growth or healing by honoring the connection between the mind, body, emotions and the spiritual sense.

  1. Myth : Holistic therapy is not scientific

Fact : A lot of data on holistic therapy is backed by scientific research. For example, an article published in the National Library of Medicine cited that meditation, breathwork, and physical exercise significantly reduce symptoms of depression and psychological discomfort.

To lessen stress and enhance their quality of life, many patients combine these techniques with conventional medical care (such as chemotherapy or physical therapy).

  1. Myth : Holistic Therapy only includes essential oils & crystals

Fact : Holistic Therapy incorporates a wider range of evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), nutrition & lifestyle medicine, physical exercise, meditation & mindfulness, integrative medicine and body-based therapies.

For instance, a 2026 network meta-analysis of 83 randomized controlled trials in regards to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) was conducted by a team of Frontiers in Psychiatry consisting of authors from 21 countries. The study found CBT and internet-based CBT to be among the most effective interventions for depression & anxiety in adults aged 55 and up.

Elsewhere, a 2025 study regarding Integrative Medicine & body-based therapies (Acupuncture, yoga, massage therapy) provides evidence that these types of services helps manage chronic pain, stress and anxiety.

  1. Myth : Holistic health is only for people who reject conventional medicine

Fact : conventional medicine is used regularly alongside holistic practices. Holistic practitioners work in collaboration with medical doctors to establish a more well rounded treatment plan.

In fact, a peer-reviewed scientific paper published in Future Integrative Medicine highlights how a collaboration between diverse healthcare practitioners can enhance patient outcomes. The authors describe integrated clinical models where holistic providers and medical doctors work together in order to establish treatment plans that best suit the patient's needs.

Similarly, the World Health Organization (WHO) started a movement to help countries enhance their healthcare system in order to manage long-term sickness. To achieve this, they collaborate with hospitals and doctors to help them work together more efficiently, using reliable scientific research to identify the most effective medicines and treatments.

  1. Myth : Holistic therapy takes a ''one-size-fits-all'' approach

Fact : It's actually quite the opposite. Holistic practitioners take into account your emotional, physical, mental & spiritual wellbeing. They help patients find meaning behind their suffering by developing tailored treatments plans based on their circumstances & goals.

For example, Dyer et al. (2022) conducted a systematic review (19 studies) involving approximately 14,000 adults. They came to the conclusion that a key component of complementary and integrative health is tailored care, where various therapies can be chosen based on the traits and circumstances of the patient.

  1. Myth : You have to believe in holistic therapy for it to work

Fact : A person's expectations are not the sole factor whether or not a treatment can produce physiological or clinical effects. After all, health is greatly influenced by a number of factors such as the condition of our surroundings, heredity, income, education, our connections with friends and family, etc.

For instance, imagine if two patients experience the same wellness treatment such as a nutrition program. One person is skeptical the process will improve their health, while the other is fully convinced. Their expectations may influence their perception of the treatment, but they won't be the only mechanisms affecting the outcome. For instance, their physical health, sleep quality & stress levels all contribute massively towards the results.

In conclusion, holistic therapy focuses on the whole person, rather than simply treating their symptoms. Its goal is to improve a person's quality of life by addressing the underlying causes of distress. Since each individual is unique, treatment plans are tailored to the patient & require different approaches. Holistic therapy is often used in complement with traditional medical practices to support the overall well-being of the patient.
